Pic- Native Seeds of Paddy and Wheat
Preservation and revival of indigenous seeds is a key focus area of Jaivik Gram. So far, around 15 traditional varieties of paddy have been collected, revived, and promoted. These include some of the most important and flavorful varieties native to the Bundelkhand's famous Mahachinnavar, Parsan, Kala Bhaat, Ramjawain, Govind Bhog, Kala Namak,
In addition, several ancient wheat varieties have also been conserved and promoted—like Bundelkhand’s renowned Kathiya wheat, Sona Moti (also known as Paigambari), Bansi wheat, Sharbati, Black wheat, Lok1, .
Desi seed conservation of traditional vegetables and herbs is also being actively undertaken by Jaivik Gram like Desi Tomato, Brinjal, Kundru, Methi, Turmeric etc. Indigenous varieties of grains and vegetables from Bundelkhand have also been collected, multiplied, and distributed among farmers.
Jaivik Gram is actively working on the conservation of indigenous seeds in collaboration with the RRA Network (Revitalizing Rainfed Agriculture Network) and WASSAN.
Through these partnerships, we aim to strengthen seed sovereignty, revive traditional varieties, and promote biodiversity-based farming systems that are resilient, regionally adapted, and farmer-led. This collective effort ensures that the knowledge and genetic wealth of traditional seeds are preserved, multiplied, and shared across communities for future generations.
This seed sovereignty initiative not only protects biodiversity, but also helps farmers access resilient, climate-adapted, and nutritionally rich seed varieties without dependency on the commercial seed market.
